Publication Info

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is a high fantasy children's novel written by C.S. Lewis. It was originally published in 1950 by Geoffrey Bles. This book is the first book published in the series. Because of this, many people believe that this book should be read first. But that is a debate for another post. This book was also made into a movie that released in 2005. While the movie is a decent book to movie adaptation, it was released to mixed reviews.

Brief Summary

This story is set in wartime England and follows the story of the four Pevensie siblings. The children, after being evacuated from London, are moved to a large house in the country, where the children, Lucy, Susan, Edmund, and Peter begin to acclamate to their new home, at least for the time being. Lucy, the youngest of the siblings, is playing one day and goes into a mysterious wardrobe, which turns out is a door into a whole new wotld. The reader, through the eyes of Lucy, is introduced into a wonderful new world, Narnia. This new world is magical and filled with wondrous creatures and places.

After much convincing, Lucy finally gets her siblings to follow her into the wardrobe to see this new world for themselves. It does not take long for them to become captivated by this place. However, things are not always as peaceful and magical as they seem.

The Pevensie children find themselves thrust into the middle of an old prophecy, and must decide whether they are going to take their part in fulfilling it. Follow the children as they seek to destroy the evil that has had its hold on Narnia for far too long.

Review

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is perhaps the most well known of all of the Narnia series. And for good reason. It is a fantastic story, with themes that are as old as time itself. We all long for tales of good vs. evil, and well, this is a pretty good one.

Much like the Magician's Nephew, this book is primarily a children's novel. However, I do not believe that this is an excuse for adults to not read it. I only read this book last year, and I found myself entranced and captivated by Lucy's innocence and hopefulness. The way that Lewis writes through the eyes of Lucy is special and truly helps the reader to feel as though they were a child.

Like I said above, this book was made into a movie in 2005. I am sad to say that this was in fact my first gateway into the world of Narnia. While I must admit the movie is not bad, especially when compared to the following movies that came after, I would have much rather experienced this world through the book first.

Finally, I touched on this point in my last post so I will keep this short; but I believe that this book should be read second within the series. Even though some will criticize me for this opinion, I think that reading the Magician's Nephew first is the proper way to read this series.

Recommendation

I'm going to keep this part extremely brief....EVERYONE SHOULD READ THIS BOOK!
