Publication Info

The Voyage of the Dawn Treader is a high fantasy children's novel written by C.S. Lewis. It was originally published in 1952 by Geoffrey Bles. This book is the third book published in the series, and was made into a movie in 2010 as a follow up to The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and Prince Caspian. Much like its predecessor, the movie was released to poor reviews and halted production on the remaining book to movie adaptations.

Brief Summary

The Voyage of the "Dawn Treader" is yet another wonderful adventure in the world of Narnia. However, unlike the previous books that we have taken a look at this book features half of the Pevensie children. In the conclusion of Prince Caspian Aslan tells Peter and Susan that they are too old to return to Narnia. Unfortunately, we find out that this is true upon reading the opening pages of this new story. However, we are introduced to a new character in light of Peter and Susan's absence, Eustace.

Eustace is the extremely annoying cousin of the Pevensie children, and we open with the children visiting him at his house. It is not long before the reader understands just how unbearable Eustace truly is. Thankfully, it is not long before the reader is transported back into the world of Narnia. After staring at a painting the children are brought before their old friend King Caspian (yes, no longer "Prince").

They soon learn that Caspian is on a quest to find the seven lost lords of Narnia. As a part of this quest, the "Dawn Treader" is sailing out to where there are no maps and everything is unexplored. The story follows our characters as they travel from unexplored island to island in search of the lost lords, and to see what is at the easternmost point of Narnia.

Review

Much like my other entries in this series, I will keep this section short. The Voyage of the "Dawn Treader" is one of my favorite books in the Narnia series. I enjoy it so much in fact that is perhaps my favorite book in the series. While I couldn't stand Eustace in the beginning of this story. I grew to love his arc and the story that we get to go along with him. Each new island that our characters travel to presents new and unique challenges that they must overcome in order to move on in their journey.

Recommendation

Just as with all of the other books in the series, this book is a must read for everyone, and should absolutely be read fifth in the series.
